Who we are and what we do...

The Society exists to promote and carry out the fascinating hobby that is metal detecting. From its humble beginnings in 1978 it has grown to be the foremost metal detecting club in the Hertfordshire area. It boasts a membership of well over 100 with 130 being our ceiling figure.

The Society meets regularly on the first Tuesday of every month in Borehamwood. The form the meeting takes is usually threefold, a guest speaker followed by Society business and then a break for tea and coffee during which time we hold a raffle and the ‘Find of the Month’ competition. We try to get a good mix of speakers and as you can see from our events page the subjects although nearly always related to the hobby can be quite varied.

Members bring along their finds to these meetings and these are viewed and discussed by those present.  We do have some very knowledgeable members, who will always be pleased to assist with identification. Some of the  finds can be seen in our gallery pages.

Like other metal detecting clubs we carry out the practical side of the hobby in the form of ‘Club Digs’. These take place on Sundays throughout the year and it is fair to say that not many Sundays are missed. The digs are restricted to members only. It is from these digs that the entries for the ‘Find of the Month’ competition are taken.

We have a good relationship with the local archaeological fraternity who are mainly based at the excellent Verulamium Roman Museum  St. Albans. This is also where the Finds Liaison Officer (FLO) for Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire is based. The FLO comes along to many of our meetings where he records members’ finds and assists with identification.

We offer the public a free recovery service for lost items such as rings, keys and even farm machinery. Our members are only too pleased to assist with this and any donations they may receive for the service is collected and given to a charity of the committees choosing at the end of the year. Recent donations have been to Keech Cottage Childrens' Hospice, Hearing dogs for the Deaf and the Salvation Army.

If you are new to metal detecting you will find that it is a fascinating hobby that  will get you hooked  before you know it. From the practical side it gets you out in the open air and gives you plenty of exercise walking the fields, not a bad thing these days.

If you would like more information on any aspect of the hobby or regarding membership, either email the Secretary, Malcolm Beagle or go to the membership page where there is a simple form to submit to apply for details. We would of course also always be pleased to hear from members of the farming community who may be willing to allow us to detect on their land.
